The granary

The granary is one of the most venerable old buildings in the city. It stood in its original form even before the earthquake of 1511 and was thoroughly renovated by order of Bishop Phillip, as evidenced by the relief panel in late Gothic Renaissance style with the bishop's coat of arms embedded in the granary's facade. Besides the castle, the granary was the most important building of the lords, who stored the feudal dues of their vassals here. At that time the granary was part of the city walls, today it houses the permanent collection of the academic painter Franc Mihelič, and in its basement there is an inn, a pub and a wine cellar.

According to legend, the greedy lord of Loka demanded only the best parts of the harvest from his vassals and collected so much of it every year that all the inhabitants of Loka could not eat it all in seven years. He was so greedy that he forbade his peasants to sell their goods and crops until the granary was empty and the lord's coffers were filled with gold. When the steward of the granary saw the coffers, he demanded his share of the profits. When the lord of Loka refused, the steward stabbed him, stole the gold coins and buried them in an unknown place.

 Getreidespeicher

2: The granary

Jurček, Jakec and Janž, three city rascals, are running down the slope from the school to the granary. They learnt at school that the granary’s caretaker stole a whole chest full of gold coins from the wicked lord of the castle and they want to find out where he buried it. Catching their breath, the three boys huddle against the wall and peer around the corner of the door. “This is the only entrance,” says Jurček. “He has to come out eventually,” says Jakec. “But what if he doesn’t come out until Sunday?” asks Janž. “Why Sunday?” asks Jakec. “Well, he has to go to mass, you idiot,” says Jurček. They start poking each other and a scuffle almost breaks out when the door suddenly flies open and the old caretaker of the granary comes out with a laundry basket.

All three leap towards him, still feverish from the fight. “Scoundrel!”. “Thief!”. “Where is it?”. “Where did you bury it?”. “Tell us at once!, or else…”. “Or else…”. “Or else…we will let loose an entire sack of mice on your grain!”. “And an entire sack of rats!”. “And an entire sack of wheat moths!”

The old caretaker of the granary is at first taken aback, but soon begins to laugh at them. Jurček, Jakec and Janž look at each other.

“Have you come to look for the treasure?” he asks them. “Well, you’re a little late for that.”

Jurček shakes his fist, “I knew it. Liza beat us to it.”

“My great-great-grandfather buried it,” the caretaker of the granary tells them, but then something occurs to him, “but there is a chance you might still find it.”

“How?” they all ask at once.

“There is an artist named Ivan Grohar who frequently visits the inn at Homan’s house,” says the caretaker of the granary. “You’ll find him up there in front of his canvas with a brush in his hand, staring across the town square as if he can see something there that the rest of us can’t. If you can persuade him to come down here and paint the granary in the early morning light, I’ll tell you where my great-great-grandfather buried the treasure.”

As Jurček, Jakec and Janž trudge back up the slope, Janž asks, “And what do you think this artist  can see that the rest of us can’t?” Jakec shrugs. “Maybe the wheat moths?”
